Gluttony of Pitching
The San Francisco Giants currently have the best pitcher in baseball in Tim Lincecum, arguably the best #3 starter in baseball in Matt Cain & have benefiting from a resurgent Barry Zito. Jonathan Sanchez has pitched out of his mind but the Giants are still struggling to find a #5 starter as Todd Wellemeyer isn’t cutting the mustard. It may be time to bring up Madison Bumgarner who could eventually replace Barry Zito as the #2 starter in the rotation.
Bumgarner, expected to be the next great pitcher the Giants bring up can help the team immensely. The team is struggling mightily offensively, as they have done for years. You may ask how Bumgarner fixes that issue, the answer is simple. The Giants can deal from strength in pitching to acquire hitting. Having Bumgarner in the minors allows the Giants to pull off a trade of the overachieving Sanchez & some other prospects in order to acquire a top hitter, say Prince Fielder.
The Giants already have Bumgarner on the forty man roster, so why not pull the trigger while Sanchez’s value is high to acquire a great player. Then merely replace the mediocre Sanchez with an even better pitcher in Bumgarner. Think of the Sports Illustrator cover of the 3 Musketeers in Cain, Lincecum & Bumgarner. Not to mention they may lead the team back to a World Series if they could ever get a hitter to replace Barry Bonds.
