Fred Fixes 49ers

It’s that time of year again the 49ers are out of playoff contention, they’ve fired their coach & they’ve promised next year they will be better.

So it’s time to play 49ers GM for the day, as they don’t let any one else do the job.

1) Hire Eric DeCosta (off of the Baltimore Ravens front office staff) to become General Manager.

2) If money is no option its time to quit going to bad college coaches or making inexperienced assistants learn on the job. Jon Gruden isn’t worth the hassle. I’m giving Jim Harbaugh a blank check to bring the 49ers back to the top as the new head coach.

3) I pull off a trade to acquire a second 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft.

4) I tell Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer & Dashan Gholdston thanks for the memories but we no longer need your services.

5) I sign Johnathan Joseph off the Bengals, Atari Bigby off the Packers & Drayton Florence off the Bills to make the secondary a NFL level secondary.

6) I instruct Jim Harbaugh to see if Taylor Mays can handle the Strong Safety position.

7) I draft Ryan Mallett from Arkansas with the 1st round pick, ending the Alex Smith era. I draft Jeremy Beal from Oklahoma with my first 2nd round pick to play defensive end, allowing Isaac Sopoaga to move back to defensive tackle. I draft Greg Jones out of Michigan St with the acquired 2nd round pick to play right outside linebacker, making Ahmad Brooks a backup. I use remaining draft picks to add depth to the secondary & offensive line.

The 2011 49ers would then look like this:

NFL Yearly Awards

Even though there are 3 weeks left in the season we’ve decided to express our thoughts on the winners of the season awards.

Most Valuable Player:
We feel there are two MVPs this season. Both make the team around them better.

Philip Rivers has been the only reason the Chargers even have a shot at playoff contention. The Chargers defense has been terrible, their special teams has been the worse in NFL history, yet all the while Rivers has dominated opponents to give the Chargers a chance.

A lot is made in regards to the Packers that Aaron Rodgers is the only reason they win or lose. That isn’t accurate, Clay Matthews has been the most impactful player on the Packers. With his dominant season games Rodgers would have to pull out of the fire last year are usually in hand by the 4th quarter due to Matthews dominance & as a result the defense as a whole looks better.

Offensive Player of the Year:

Philip Rivers may break the record for passing yards in a season & has led a terrible Chargers team into contention. There haven’t been many dominant seasons from players, but honorable mention goes to Arian Foster of the Houston Texans.

Defensive Player of the Year:

Cameron Wake has been the most dominant pass rusher in the NFL this season. He gets the nod over Matthews here because he plays four games against the Patriots & Jets who have fairly good offensive lines, that he has just ran through.

NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year:

Once Dez Bryant got injured the doubt was removed. Sam Bradford is the runaway winner for this award. He has turned an abysmal St Louis Rams team into a formidable opponent, for the first time in years the Rams look like a legit team.

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year:

Only the DB in New England drafted out of Rutgers will make any bones out of Ndamukong Suh winning this award. While the Lions don’t have as good a record as the Rams do Suh has put the Lions into contention. His skill & ability, as well as strength, give the Lions a chance in any game.

NFL Comeback Player of the Year:

Darren McFadden was an afterthought to most after two mediocre seasons in Oakland & a number of injuries limiting his time on the field. This season McFadden has run through, around & past most defenses put in front of him. As a result the Raiders have enjoyed more success then anyone assumed was possible.

NFL Coach of the Year:

Mike Smith has lead the Falcons to prominence this season. Only I predicted the Falcons to run away with their division like they did, as many assumed the Saints would repeat as division champs, but they are not out of any game due to the coaching of Mike Smith & the arm of Matt Ryan. Smith was given a shot with no previous head coaching experience & he is making the most of it.

AFC Player of the Year:

Tom Terrific has had a great season. If Brady had an average season as most predicted he would the Patriots would miss the playoffs this year, but due to his outstanding play the Patriots are the first team to clinch a playoff spot.

NFC Player of the Year:

Most of the offensive stats have been piled up in the AFC this season but Roddy White of the Falcons has been an unstoppable force in the NFC this season. Honorable mention to Michael Vick of the Eagles.

NFL Rookie of the Year:

Once Dez Bryant got injured the doubt was removed. Sam Bradford is the runaway winner for this award. He has turned an abysmal St Louis Rams team into a formidable opponent, for the first time in years the Rams look like a legit team.

AFC Rookie of the Year:

The only more dominant defensive rookie then Devin McCourty has been Ndamukong Suh. While Suh has been an overpowing defensive tackle plowing through offensive lineman, McCourty has been a ball hocking cornerback, who has been put into great positions by Bill Belichek.

NFC Rookie of the Year:

Once Dez Bryant got injured the doubt was removed. Sam Bradford is the runaway winner for this award. He has turned an abysmal St Louis Rams team into a formidable opponent, for the first time in years the Rams look like a legit team.

NFL Assistant Coach of the Year:

Jason Garrett started the season as the Cowboys offensive coordinator. Once Jerry Jones finally realized, like the rest of us had already done, that Wade Phillips was overmatched as an NFL head coach Garrett was installed as the team’s new head coach. As the head coach Garrett has made the Cowboys show life in the games they’ve played. They are 3-2 with Garrett as coach, losing both games 30-27 due to late defensive failures. With games remaining against Washington, Arizona & Philadelphia Garrett will have gone 5-3 as the head coach this season, far superior to Bum’s record!

Golden Toe Award:

While the award should go to the Titans Rob Bironas I think Jay Feely should get some love. He was not renewed by the Jets for no apparent reason & this season has been the only bright spot on the Arizona Cardinals, a team that has obviously folded & is waiting for next season.

NFL Executive of the Year:

Tom Dimitroff of the Atlanta Falcons has turned the Falcons from laughing stock into Super Bowl contenders for years to come. And the interesting thing is, his work from this year, is even better than last year’s efforts. Arthur Blank went out of his way to make sure he obtained a great general manager & a great coach when everything hit the fan. He is now being rewarded for having faith in Dimitroff & Smith.

Wild Wild West

The Rams are currently 5-6 & leading the division. Their remaining schedule is: @ Arizona, @ New Orleans, vs. Kansas City, vs. San Francisco, @ Seattle

The Rams have managed to overachieve all season, largely due to Sam Bradford. They have no chance against New Orleans or Kansas City. However they can easily beat Arizona & Seattle. The game in Week 16 at San Francisco will determine who wins the division. I expect the 49ers to win that game. Meaning St Louis will finish 7-9, but lose the division to the 49ers (also at 7-9) by virtue of losing two games to them.

The Seahawks are currently 5-6, second in the division. Their remaining schedule is: vs. Carolina, @ San Francisco, vs. Atlanta, @ Tampa Bay, vs. St Louis

The Seahawks have also overachieved all season. Chances are they will eek out a victory against Carolina but end the season losing their last four, playing superior talent. Finishing 6-10 will be fine with the Seahawks, if they understand they are rebuilding.

The 49ers are currently 4-7. Their remaining schedule is: @ Green Bay, vs. Seattle, @ San Diego, @ St Louis, vs. Arizona

The 49ers have three division games (two of which are at home) & two non division games. The 49ers are clearly the class of the division, though that is not saying much. They will easily win the three division games & though they should be competitive in the Green Bay game they won’t beat Green Bay or San Diego. Finishing the season 7-9.

The Cardinals are currently 3-8. Their remaining schedule is: vs. St Louis, vs. Denver, @ Carolina, vs. Dallas, @ San Francisco

I don’t see the Cardinals winning any of these games. That is saying something considering how bad the Broncos & Panthers are. The Cardinals have fallen rather quickly & unless Kurt Warner rejoins the team it doesn’t appear as though the team will put up much of a fight the rest of the season. Finishing the season 3-13.

As a result the 7-9 49ers will be the first team in history to finish the season under .500 & still win their division.
